Where it comes from

The story of Nydia

Edward Bulwer-Lytton published The Last Days of Pompeii in 1834, and Nydia is its most memorable character: blind, enslaved, in love with a man who does not notice, and the only person in the city who can find her way through the ash and darkness when the eruption puts out the sun. She leads the others to safety and then walks into the sea. Victorian readers on both sides of the Atlantic wept over her, sculptors carved her, and parents began giving the name to daughters. It took particularly well in Puerto Rico and among Spanish-speaking families in America, where it is still in use.

Meaningscholars disagree

from the nest

The name was constructed from the Latin nidus, a nest, with the sense of a refuge or a sheltered place. Since it was invented, the meaning is whatever its inventor intended, and he did not write it down.

Nydia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1992, with 84 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Nydia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, spelled as it sounds, and easy in both English and Spanish.
  • It has a documented origin down to the year and the book, which almost no name can offer.
  • It is uncommon without looking invented, despite being exactly that.
What to consider
  • Nidia is the commoner Spanish spelling and will be written instead.
  • The character it comes from is a tragic one, which some families will want to know before choosing it.
  • English readers will try NYE-dee-uh on first sight.
