Feminine · “the cooing of doves”
Hadeel is the sound doves make. Arabic has a specific word for the cooing of a dove, and it is used as a woman's name — a naming choice with no real equivalent in English, where the nearest thing would be calling a daughter Birdsong. It is common across the Levant and the Gulf, and its American peak is 1998.

The story of Hadeel
Arabic has an unusually large vocabulary for natural sounds and phenomena, and naming draws on it: Hadeel for doves' cooing, Ghaida for a supple young woman, Rand for a fragrant tree, Reem for a white gazelle. These are not compound descriptions but single ordinary words, and they belong to the same poetic tradition that supplies most classical Arabic names. Hadeel became widely used in the later twentieth century across Syria, Jordan, Palestine and the Gulf states. American records show it from the 1980s, rising with Levantine migration and peaking at the end of the 1990s.
Meaning
the cooing of doves
Arabic hadil is the verbal noun of hadala, to coo — specifically the sound a dove or pigeon makes. It is an ordinary word, and the name is a transparent use of it. Classical Arabic poetry uses the cooing of doves constantly as an image of longing and lament, which gives the word a literary weight beyond its plain sense. The transliteration Hadeel writes the long i as ee, which is the usual Levantine and Gulf convention in English.
