Gwendolen
Feminine · “Welsh gwen and dolen”
The Importance of Being Earnest is a play about names. Gwendolen will only marry a man called Ernest, and says so directly: the name inspires absolute confidence and she pities any woman married to a man called John. Wilde built an entire farce out of the proposition that a name determines a life.

The story of Gwendolen
Wilde's play, first performed in February 1895, is unusually direct about naming. Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew are both determined to marry men called Ernest, and both are given elaborate speeches about it. The joke is double: the name is a homophone of the adjective earnest, and the two men in question are conspicuously not earnest about anything. Lady Bracknell's interrogation of a suitor includes his name among his qualifications. The whole plot turns on a name being true by accident at the end. It is the most sustained treatment of naming in English comedy, and it is worth noticing that the play was performed for eight weeks before Wilde's arrest closed it and his name was removed from the playbills, which is a bleaker joke about names than anything in the text.

Welsh gwen and dolen, white and ring
From Welsh gwen, white, fair, blessed or holy, with a disputed second element usually read as dolen, a ring or link, or as a form of the name Dolwen. The gwen element is one of the most productive in Welsh naming and appears in Gwyneth, Branwen, Olwen and Ceridwen. Gwendolen is the spelling Wilde used in 1895; Gwendolyn is the commoner American form. It peaks in 1903.
