Gretchen
Feminine · “pearl”
Gretchen is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 53,799 girls against 38 boys since 1880.
Gretchen is a German diminutive twice over. Margarete gave Grete by contraction, and Grete took -chen, the German ending for smallness and affection — so the name is a pearl made small and then made dear.

The story of Gretchen
Margarete was among the commonest German women's names for centuries and produced Grete, Gretel and Gretchen as familiar forms. Goethe's Faust, published in parts from 1808, gave the name its most famous bearer — the Gretchen whose story is the emotional center of the play and whose name became a German byword. German emigration carried it to America in the nineteenth century, and it peaked there in the early 1970s.
Meaning
pearl
From the Greek margarites, 'pearl', through the Latin Margarita and the German Margarete. The -chen suffix is the standard German diminutive, the one in Mädchen and Hündchen; it adds affection rather than meaning.

The Luann test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gretchen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Luann climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Luann's path sketches the road Gretchen is walking now.
Gretchen sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The pearl meaning is transparent and undisputed.
- A genuine German name with a documented literary history, not an American construction.
- Margaret stands behind it in English as a formal form with a thousand years of use.
- It reads as unmistakably German, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
- The Faust association is strong for anyone who knows the play, and it is not a happy story.
