The story of Gracy
The Puritans named children for virtues — Faith, Hope, Charity, Prudence, Temperance, Mercy, Grace — and of the whole set only Faith, Hope and Grace survived into modern general use. Grace was ordinary in England and America from the seventeenth century and has never disappeared; it peaked in America around 1900 and again after 2000. The diminutives Gracie and Gracy belong to the first of those peaks, when -ie and -y endings were being registered as full names in large numbers. Gracy's 1897 peak sits inside that habit, and both spellings faded after 1920 before Gracie returned in the 2000s.
Meaning
Grace, favor, thanks
From Latin gratia, favor, kindness or thanks, through French grâce. The reading is settled. In Christian theology grace is the unearned favor of God, which is why the Puritans used it; the name carries both the theological sense and the ordinary English one of elegance. Gracy is a spelling variant of Gracie with no separate history.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
