Where it comes from

The story of Gissell

Early medieval treaties were guaranteed with people. A ruler handed over a son, a daughter or a nephew, who lived at the other court, was educated there and was returned when the terms held; the practice was routine across the Frankish world and into the Viking age. The hostage was a person of standing, and the Germanic element gisil, which names the role, became a naming element in its own right, giving Gisela, Gisele, Giselher and Gislebert. Charlemagne's sister and daughter were both called Gisela. The name reached wide modern use through the ballet Giselle, first staged in Paris in 1841, which is still one of the most performed works in the repertoire, and it became a favorite in Spanish-speaking America in the late twentieth century, where this spelling belongs.

From the Old Germanic element gisil, a pledge or hostage, which appears in a number of Frankish names. Gisela was a common name in the Carolingian family. Gissell is a modern Spanish-influenced American spelling of Giselle; its peak is 2000.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Gissell went to 9 girls in 2025, but Gissel is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 39, which makes it the 921st most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,186 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 41,212 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Gissell itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
