The story of Jonni
In late medieval England a third or more of all men were called John or William, and given names had stopped doing the job of identifying anybody. That is the pressure that produced hereditary surnames: a man had to be John the smith, John of the hill, John son of Richard, and within a few generations the second part had frozen and become inheritable. The law had the same problem and solved it by inventing people. For centuries English legal actions used fictitious parties with placeholder names, and the one that survived into ordinary speech is John Doe, still the name given to anybody whose real one is unknown. The pet forms of the name went everywhere, and by the middle of the last century Johnnie and its respellings were being given to American girls as often as to boys.
