Gioia
Feminine · “joy”
Gioia is the Italian word for joy, and it is also a trap on the page: the g and the i together spell a single soft consonant, so the first i is not a vowel at all. Five letters, three of them doing something an English reader does not expect.

The story of Gioia
Italian has a long tradition of naming daughters with abstract nouns of good fortune: Gioia, Speranza, Letizia, Felicita, Consolata. Gioia is also a surname and appears in several place names in the south, including Gioia del Colle and Gioia Tauro. It reached the United States with Italian migration, and its best American year on record is 1929, which places it with the American-born daughters of the great migration rather than with the migrants themselves. It has stayed very rare in English-speaking use since, largely because the spelling gives no help at all to a reader who has not met Italian orthography.
Meaning
joy
Italian gioia, joy or delight, and also a jewel; from Latin gaudia, the plural of gaudium, joy, which is the same root as English joy through Old French joie. The double sense of joy and jewel is present in Italian and gives the word a second life as a term of endearment.

Two syllables. The gi spells a single j sound and the first i is silent, exactly as in Giovanni and Giorgio. English readers reliably try gee-OH-ee-ah on first sight.

The trade-off
- A settled, cheerful meaning that is a live word in Italian rather than a reconstructed root.
- Gigi and Gia are both fashionable short forms already in circulation.
- Genuinely uncommon in the United States while being ordinary in Italy.
- The spelling misleads every English reader on the first attempt.
- Joya, Gioia and Gia are all near neighbors and get confused.
- In Italy it is a fairly plain word, closer to naming a child Joy than to anything exotic.
