The story of George
George was carried by a soldier-martyr who became the patron of England, Georgia, Portugal and a dozen other places, and English kings made it a national name. Naming a daughter after a father or grandfather was ordinary in nineteenth-century America, and clerks wrote what they were given — which is why the girls' registers of that period carry George, John and William alongside Georgia and Georgina. The practice had largely ended by the 1930s.
