Genessis
Feminine · “origin”
Genesis is the Greek word for origin, and it became the name of the first book of the Bible because the Septuagint translators used it as a title. Genessis doubles the s, which is one of the standard American ways of marking a word name as a chosen name rather than a common noun. Its peak is 2009.

The story of Genessis
Genesis entered American naming in the 1980s and rose sharply through the 1990s and 2000s, especially among Spanish-speaking and African-American families, alongside Trinity, Nevaeh, Serenity and Destiny — abstract nouns and biblical words used directly as names. It reached the American top hundred for girls in the 2010s. The doubled s belongs to the respelling wave that follows any fast rise, and it does something specific: it separates the name from the ordinary noun on the page, so that a reader sees a name first rather than a book title. That is the same job the doubled letters do in Alissa, Jessa and Marissa.
Meaning
origin, coming into being
Greek genesis means origin, source or the act of coming into being, from the root gen-, 'to be born, to become' — the same root as gene, generate, genus and genealogy. The Septuagint used it as the title of the first book of the Torah, whose Hebrew name is Bereshit, 'in the beginning', taken from its first word. So the English title of the book is Greek and the book itself is Hebrew. The derivation is settled.

The Auriel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Genessis's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Auriel climbed just as high around 1991, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Auriel's path sketches the road Genessis is walking now.
Genessis sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
