Auriel
Feminine · “Latin "golden”
Auriel is given to both — 870 girls and 111 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Auriel looks like an angel's name and only half is. The -iel ending is Hebrew El, God — the same element that closes Michael, Gabriel and Uriel — but the aur- is Latin aurum, gold. The name is a hybrid that reads as heavenly because of its ending.

The story of Auriel
Hebrew has two elements that end names and both name God: -el, the general word for God, closing Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Daniel and Samuel; and -yah or -iah, the abbreviated personal name, closing Isaiah, Jeremiah and Zechariah. Between them they end a very large share of the biblical name stock, and both were harvested by later naming traditions for their sound. Auriel is what happens when the ending attaches to something Latin: the result is not a Hebrew name and does not mean anything in Hebrew, but it is unmistakably angel-shaped to an English reader. The American figures peak in 1991.

Latin "golden", with a Hebrew-looking ending
Two lines converge. Auriol and Auriel come from Latin aureolus, golden, and exist as French and English surnames. Uriel is a separate Hebrew name, ʾUriʾel, God is my light, borne by an archangel in Jewish tradition. The spelling Auriel sits between them, and the -el ending will be read as the divine element by anyone who knows the angel names, whichever source a family intended.

The Stephane test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Auriel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Stephane climbed just as high around 1967, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Stephane's path sketches the road Auriel is walking now.
Auriel sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
