Stephane loses an accent that in French marks the stressed syllable. The French form carries one on the first e, which tells a reader both how to say the vowel and where the weight falls; American records strip accents as a matter of course, and what arrives is a spelling with the information removed.

Where it comes from

The story of Stephane

The Greek object was a circle of leaves. Olive at Olympia, wild celery at Nemea, pine at Isthmia, laurel at Delphi: each of the four great games gave a different plant, and the wreath was the entire prize, since these were amateur competitions in the sense that the winner's city did the paying afterwards. The word also covered the garlands worn at feasts and given to public benefactors. Every English translation of the name as crown imports a metal object with jewels in it that nobody in the ancient world would have recognized, and the actual thing was made of leaves and lasted a few days.

Meaning

Crown, wreath

Greek stephanos, a wreath or garland, from a verb meaning to encircle. The wreath in question was the one given to victorious athletes and to honored citizens, made of leaves rather than metal, and the shift in English to a jewelled crown is a later reading of the word.

Stephane sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1985, with 40 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Stephane sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • Steph is a short, plain, unisex everyday form.
  • The meaning is concrete and can be given to a child in one word.
What to consider
  • The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • Without the accent, English readers produce a different name entirely.
  • In France it is a man's name, which travelers will notice.
