The story of Gavino
Sardinia keeps a set of saints' names that the rest of Italy does not use, and Gavino is the most-given of them. The story is a local one: a soldier who refused to execute two Christian prisoners and was killed with them, and whose relics were rediscovered in the sixteenth century in a way that fixed the cult permanently. The basilica at Porto Torres carries his name. Sardinian families brought it to American records, mostly in the early twentieth century, and it has always been uncommon here.
Meaningscholars disagree
of Gabii, an ancient Latin town
Latin Gabinus is generally read as coming from Gabii, a town in Latium near Rome, so the name means a man from there. That is the standard account. Some sources connect it instead to the Sabines or to a Roman family name; none of the alternatives is strong, and none is refuted.

The Lonney test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gavino's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lonney climbed just as high around 1944, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lonney's path sketches the road Gavino is walking now.
Gavino sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It carries a documented local cult with a building still standing over it.
- The vowels are open and the stress is obvious, so it is easy to say.
- It is unmistakably Sardinian, which for families from the island is the whole point.
- Gavin is far commoner in English and will be written instead.
- Outside Sardinian and Italian communities the name is unfamiliar and gets spelled out.
- Its meaning is a place nobody has heard of, which makes for a short explanation.
Nobody names a baby alone.
