Gaëlle is Breton by way of French: the feminine of Gaël, a name that Brittany reconstructed from Judicaël, one of its own seventh-century kings. Its American record is remarkable for how new it is — the peak year in the data is 2025, which makes it one of the youngest names in the whole list.

The story of Gaelle
Judicaël was a seventh-century king of Domnonée in Brittany who abdicated to become a monk and was later venerated as a saint; his name stayed in Breton use and was clipped to Gaël in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries during the Breton cultural revival. Gaëlle followed as the feminine and became genuinely common in France from the 1970s. Its American arrival is later and comes largely through Haiti, where French naming remains standard and Gaëlle is well established. The name's very recent American peak reflects Haitian-American families and a general appetite for French names with an accent in them.

Not established; probably a back-formation from Judicaël
Gaël is generally explained as a shortening of Breton Judicaël, whose second element is a diminutive suffix rather than a word with its own meaning; the first element is connected to a word for a lord or to combat. A separate popular reading takes Gaël from the English word Gael, meaning an Irish or Scottish Gael, which is a later association rather than the source. Gaëlle is the French feminine, formed with -lle.

Two syllables, stress on the second. The dieresis over the e is what separates the a and the e into two sounds; without it a French reader would say GAL. American records drop the dieresis routinely.

The Kennidy test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gaelle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kennidy climbed just as high around 2003, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kennidy's path sketches the road Gaelle is walking now.
Gaelle sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
