The story of Freedom
The 1976 peak is the Bicentennial and it produced a small cluster of patriotic names: Freedom, Liberty, America and Justice all rise in the American data around 1976 and fall away afterwards. Similar spikes attend other national moments. What makes the word itself interesting is the etymology. Free is not from a root about release or absence of constraint. It is from a root meaning dear or beloved, which in a society organized by kinship distinguished the members of a household, who were loved and therefore free, from the slaves, who were property. The same root gives friend and the name of the goddess Frigg, and the Friday named for her. So freedom and friendship come from one idea, and the idea is belonging rather than independence, which is close to the opposite of what the modern word suggests.
Meaning
Old English freodom, the state of being free
From Old English freo, free, and -dom, a state or condition, the same suffix as in kingdom and wisdom. The root behind freo is Germanic fri-, meaning beloved or belonging to the kin group, which also gives friend and is cognate with Sanskrit priya, dear. A free person was a member of the household rather than a slave. It peaks as an American given name in 1976.

The Steve test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Freedom's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Steve climbed just as high around 1957, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Steve's path sketches the road Freedom is walking now.
