The story of Freddy
The source is the old Germanic compound Frithuric, which became Friedrich in German and traveled into English partly through the Normans and more decisively through the Hanoverian kings of the eighteenth century, after which Frederick became thoroughly at home in Britain and America. Freddy is the affectionate clipping of that name, formed the same way Willy comes from William, and it has done duty for Alfred, Wilfred and Frederica too. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries it stopped being only a household form and began appearing on birth records in its own right. The spelling divides along a soft line: Freddie is the more common form in Britain, Freddy the one American records have generally favored.
