Gonzalo
Masculine · “first element "battle”
Gonzalo comes down from Gundisalvus, a Latinized Visigothic name written in Iberian charters more than a thousand years ago, and it is the source of one of the most common surnames in the Spanish-speaking world: González, "son of Gonzalo." It has been in continuous use in Castile since the Middle Ages — Gonzalo de Berceo, the first Castilian poet known by name, wrote in the thirteenth century. In the mouth it is three even syllables with the weight in the middle: gohn-SAH-loh.

The story of Gonzalo
The name belongs to the Visigoths, the Germanic people who ruled Hispania before the Arab conquest, and it survives because their names were written down in Latin: Gundisalvus appears in medieval Iberian documents alongside Rodericus and Fredenandus. From there it wore down in Castilian speech to Gonçalvo and then Gonzalo, while Portuguese kept a closer form in Gonçalo. Its patronymic, González, spread far wider than the given name itself and traveled with Spanish across the Atlantic. Shakespeare borrowed it for the loyal old counselor Gonzalo in The Tempest, which is how the name slipped into English literature without ever becoming an English name.
Meaningscholars disagree
first element "battle, war"; second element unresolved
The first part goes back to Germanic gunþ-, "battle" or "war," and that much is agreed. The second element is where scholars part ways: some read Gothic and Old High German sal, "hall" or "dwelling," others connect it to Latin salvus, "safe, whole," which would make the name something like "safe in battle." Both readings are seriously held, so the name arrives with two respectable halves rather than one tidy translation.

Pronouncing Gonzalo
gohn-SAH-loh
Stress on the middle syllable. In Latin American Spanish the z is an s sound; in most of Spain it is the th of "think." English speakers often say the z as a true z, which is a mild drift rather than a mistake.

The Daryle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gonzalo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Daryle climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Daryle's path sketches the road Gonzalo is walking now.
Gonzalo sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Instantly recognizable to Spanish and Portuguese speakers, and tied to González, a surname almost everyone in the US has already seen in print.
- An unbroken written record from Visigothic Iberia through medieval Castile to the present — no reconstruction needed.
- Established short forms already in real use: Gonza, Lalo, Chalo.
- Spelled the same in Spanish, Galician and English; only Portuguese changes it, to Gonçalo.
- Three clear syllables with predictable stress, easy to say once heard.
- Gonzo is the short form English speakers reach for first, and it comes attached to gonzo journalism and a Muppet. Some bearers enjoy that; others steer people firmly to Gonza.
- Outside Spanish-speaking circles the name will usually need spelling out, and many people know González as a surname before they meet Gonzalo as a first name — expect that mix-up occasionally.
- A child with this name will likely be the only one in the class, which cuts both ways: no confusion on the roster, but also no one else to share the pronunciation lesson with.
