The word itself is old: Old English grǣg, cousin to the Old French gris, used first as a byname for a person with gray hair. Norman families of de Grey brought a second, toponymic line into Britain, and from it descends the Scottish Clan Gray as well as the English gentry surname. The spelling split along national lines — Grey became standard in British English, Gray in American — and it is the American form that took hold as a given name in the United States, part of the long habit of moving family surnames to the first slot. It has stayed on the records there for well over a century without ever crowding a classroom.
