Uziel
Masculine · Hebrew roots · “God is my strength”
Uziel comes out of the Hebrew Bible with its meaning worn on the outside — the ʿuz of strength welded to El, God. It has traveled well: at home in Hebrew, at home in Spanish, and spelled the same way in both. Three syllables that end on a lift, oo-zee-EL, with the stress carried to the last beat the way Gabriel and Daniel carry theirs.

The story of Uziel
The name belongs first to a Levite: Uzziel, son of Kohath, listed in Exodus among the ancestral heads of the priestly clans, and remembered afterwards through the family called the Uzzielites. From there it passed into Greek as Oziēl in the Septuagint and into English Bibles as Uzziel, while Hebrew kept it in ordinary use as a given name and Sephardic families carried it as a surname across the Mediterranean and beyond. The shorter spelling Uziel is the form that took hold in modern Hebrew and, separately, in Spanish-speaking countries, where biblical -el names have long been a favored category. In the United States it turns up most strongly in states with deep Mexican-American communities, which is a good clue to the road it traveled.

The Chirstopher test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Uziel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Chirstopher climbed just as high around 1981, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Chirstopher's path sketches the road Uziel is walking now.

The trade-off
- The meaning is transparent and uncontested — the -el ending is the same one in Gabriel, Daniel and Samuel, and readers recognize it instantly.
- Spelled identically in Hebrew transliteration, Spanish and Portuguese, so it needs no adjustment when it crosses a border.
- Documented continuously from the Hebrew Bible onward, both as a given name and as a Sephardic family name.
- One established short form, Uzi, which also works as a name on its own.
- Distinctive without being invented: almost certainly the only one in a classroom, but never an unfamiliar shape.
- Uzi, the natural nickname, is also the name of the Israeli submachine gun — which was itself named after its designer, Uziel Gal. Some families use the short form freely; others quietly skip it.
- Uriel is a close neighbor on the page and better known in English, so expect the occasional misreading, along with Uzziel and Oziel as competing spellings.
- Stress placement shifts between English and Spanish speakers, and the z can land as z or s. Nothing hard to fix, but it will be a lifelong small correction.
- It is climbing steadily rather than sitting still, so it is likely to feel somewhat more familiar by the time a child now born reaches school than it does today.
