The story of Vito
The name begins as Latin Vitus, borne by an early Christian martyr venerated in Sicily and southern Italy and later counted among the Fourteen Holy Helpers of medieval European devotion. His cult spread far past Italy — into the German lands as Veit, into Bohemia as Vít, where Prague's cathedral bears his name — while in Italy itself he left San Vito on maps from Sicily to Puglia. Vito is the Italian outcome of that long line, and in parts of Puglia it also serves as the everyday form of compound names like Vitantonio and Vitangelo. Italian families brought it to the United States, which is why it still clusters most strongly in New York, California and Florida.
Meaning

From Latin Vitus, generally traced to vita, "life". The related Latin adjective vitus and Germanic influences shaped some later spellings, but the Latin root is the accepted one.

The Houston test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Vito's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Houston climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Houston's path sketches the road Vito is walking now.

The trade-off
- Four letters, two syllables, and spelled the way it sounds — rarely misheard and rarely misspelled once heard.
- A documented line from Latin antiquity through medieval Europe to modern Italy, with no gaps to explain.
- Recognizable across Italian, German, Czech, Polish and Hungarian in closely related forms.
- Short enough to need no nickname, so the name a child is given is the name they keep.
- Familiar in sound to most American ears without being a name shared with classmates.
- Vito Corleone of The Godfather is the association many Americans reach for first. It is an affectionate one for some and a mafia shorthand for others, and it will come up more than once in a lifetime.
- Living bearers skew strongly toward older generations, so the name may read as a grandfather's name to people who know it mainly from Italian-American families.
- Outside the Italian-American strongholds of New York, California and Florida, it can feel unfamiliar enough that people ask about the origin — usually with interest rather than confusion.
- Sydenham's chorea was once called St Vitus's Dance, an old medical echo of the saint. Almost no one under retirement age will make the connection.
