François means Frenchman, which makes it the most French name available: a national adjective turned into a first name in the sixteenth century and worn ever since. American records strip the cedilla, and Francois without it is what most American bearers actually have on their papers.

The story of Francois
Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone was called Francesco, the Frenchman, and after his death in 1226 the nickname became one of Europe's great names. France took it as François, and the first King François, who reigned from 1515 and brought Leonardo to Amboise, made it royal. It has been continuously ordinary in France ever since. In North America it arrived with the French colonial project and stayed thickest in Quebec and Louisiana; the American peak in the early 1960s reflects Franco-American and Haitian families, and Haitian usage is substantial. The cedilla is almost always lost in American records, which changes how the name is read: without it the c is hard.
Meaning
Frenchman
From Old French franceis, a Frenchman, from the Franks, whose tribal name is generally connected to a word meaning free — the same root that gives the English word frank. François became a given name through Francis of Assisi, whose own name Francesco was a nickname meaning the little Frenchman, given because of his father's French trade.

The Mcarther test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Francois's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Mcarther climbed just as high around 1942, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Mcarther's path sketches the road Francois is walking now.
Francois sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is one of the most recognizable French names in the world.
- The meaning is settled and the history runs through Francis of Assisi and a king.
- Frank and Fran are ready English forms.
- American systems drop the cedilla, and without it the spelling misleads.
- English speakers who have not heard it said will not get near the pronunciation.
- It is emphatically national — the name says Frenchman, whatever the family's own history.
