Florance
Feminine · “blossoming”
Florance is Florence with one unstressed vowel changed, and the change is inaudible — nobody says the middle of this name carefully enough for an a and an e to sound different. Underneath is a Latin name about blossoming, a Tuscan city, and the English nurse who made the name ordinary in the first place.

The story of Florance
The name came into English use through the city rather than through the saints, and it came late. English families of the nineteenth century traveled to Italy, admired Florence, and brought the name home for daughters — which is exactly what the family of Florence Nightingale did, naming her for the city she was born in. Her work in the Crimea made her one of the best-known women in the English-speaking world, and the name followed her into ordinary use in a way it never had before. Florance is one of several spellings that appear alongside the standard one in American records of that period, when a name learned by ear from a newspaper was written down however it sounded.
Meaning
blossoming; flourishing
Latin florens, the participle of florere, to bloom or to flourish, gave the personal names Florentius and Florentia and the place name Florentia. All of them mean the same thing, and the city the Romans founded on the Arno carried it as a wish rather than a description. Italian wore Florentia down to Firenze; English took the Latin form back off the map and used it as a woman's name. The a in this spelling belongs to none of that history and changes none of it.

FLOR-uns, two syllables, the second one barely there. That is why the spelling can vary without anyone noticing: the vowel in question is never fully pronounced in English, so an a and an e sound identical in that position.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely settled in English and needs no introduction anywhere.
- It carries a city, a Latin verb and a well-documented history in one short word.
- Flo, Florrie and Ren are all available, and they sit in three quite different registers.
- This will be read as a misspelling of Florence, because for practical purposes that is what it looks like.
- The name is still strongly associated with the oldest living generations, and it has not yet made the return that names of its era sometimes make.
- Since the two spellings sound the same, correcting the a is a purely visual argument, which makes it a tiring one to keep having.
