The story of Flavio
The Flavians were a comparatively obscure Italian family until Vespasian took the throne in 69, after which three emperors and a dynasty carried the name; the Colosseum is properly the Flavian Amphitheatre. The name survived into Christian use through several saints and passed into Italian and Spanish as Flavio. It has been in steady use in Italy, Spain and Latin America and reaches American records with families from all of them.
Meaning
golden-haired, yellow
From Latin flavus, yellow or golden; the gens Flavia took its name from the coloring of an ancestor, and the same root gives the English flavescent and the botanical flavus.

The Demetrio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Flavio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Demetrio climbed just as high around 1908, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Demetrio's path sketches the road Flavio is walking now.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning with a documented Roman origin and an imperial dynasty behind it.
- Every letter is said, so Italian and Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
- Six letters and three syllables, manageable to write.
- The English word flavor is close in sound and will be joked about.
- The meaning describes coloring, which may not fit the child.
- Flavio and Flavius are both in use and the second reads as considerably more Roman.
