The story of Fernando
Fernando Pessoa, a Lisbon clerk, wrote under dozens of heteronyms, invented poets with their own biographies and styles, such as Alberto Caeiro and Álvaro de Campos; after his death a trunk of more than twenty-five thousand papers was found, and scholars are still sorting it. In his first full season Fernando Valenzuela, a young left-hander from Sonora with a screwball and an upward glance in his windup, won his first eight starts for the Dodgers, and Fernandomania filled ballparks across America.
