Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Elio
"sun", or a Roman family name of uncertain origin
Two readings sit side by side. In Italian, Elio is the standard form of Helios, the Greek sun — that is why Italian dictionaries gloss it as "sun". Historically, though, it comes down from the Latin gens name Aelius, whose own origin was already unclear to the Romans; the link between Aelius and Greek helios is proposed but not proven. Neither reading cancels the other, and both are genuinely part of the name.
Aelius → Elio
How it traveled
The name begins in Rome as Aelius, the family name of the emperor Hadrian, born Publius Aelius Hadrianus in the first century — a name stamped on inscriptions, coins and the Aelian bridge across the Tiber. Italian and Spanish carried it forward as Elio, where it also came to serve as the vernacular form of Helios, the Greek sun.
Fernando
The Spanish and Portuguese form of Ferdinand, 'bold journey'
Ferdinand comes from Germanic elements usually read as 'journey' and 'bold'; Fernando is its Spanish and Portuguese form.
Ferdinand → Fernando
How it traveled
Fernando Pessoa, a Lisbon clerk, wrote under dozens of heteronyms, invented poets with their own biographies and styles, such as Alberto Caeiro and Álvaro de Campos; after his death a trunk of more than twenty-five thousand papers was found, and scholars are still sorting it. In his first full season Fernando Valenzuela, a young left-hander from Sonora with a screwball and an upward glance in his windup, won his first eight starts for the Dodgers, and Fernandomania filled ballparks across America.

Out loud, and in short
Elio
EH-lee-oh
That is the Italian and Spanish pronunciation, with a short first vowel. Many English speakers reach for EE-lee-oh instead, on the pattern of Eli. Both are heard in the US, so it helps to say which one you mean early and often.
- Eli — The most natural English short form, and a long-established given name in its own right — expect some people to assume it is the full name.
- Lio — Informal, used within families; also spelled Leo by people who mishear it.
- Elito — Spanish-style affectionate diminutive, used by relatives rather than at school.
Fernando
fer-NAN-doh
Three syllables with the stress on the second.
- Nando — The usual Spanish pet form.
- Fer — A common short form in Mexico.

The trade-offs, name by name
Elio
Strengths
- Spelled exactly as it sounds once the first vowel is settled — four letters, no silent parts, nothing to dictate twice.
- Works unchanged in Italian and Spanish, and needs only an accent in Portuguese, so it travels without being translated.
- Comes with Eli already waiting as a short form, a name Americans know well and spell correctly.
To consider
- The EH-/EE- split is real and will follow him. Teachers, coaches and roll-calls will guess, and he will spend a certain amount of life correcting them — cheerfully, most likely, but doing it.
- It sits very close to Elia, Elias, Elliot and Emilio, and gets mistaken for all four in writing and in speech.
- For adults who read the novel or saw the film, the name is closely tied to Call Me by Your Name. That association will fade with his own generation, but it is strong right now among grown-ups.
Fernando
Strengths
- A classic name in Spanish and Portuguese.
- Famous namesakes in literature and sport.
- Comes with Nando as a ready pet form.
To consider
- Many will think of the ABBA song.
- English speakers sometimes flatten the vowels.
- The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every Fernando is a boy.
