The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Edwin

Rich friend

Old English ead, wealth or prosperity, and wine, a friend, so the name promises a well-off friend or a friend of the family's fortune. Both elements are among the most productive in Anglo-Saxon naming and both are transparent, which is unusual for a name this old.

Eadwine → Edwin

How it traveled

Edwin of Northumbria took two years over the decision, and the account written a century later gives the council he called: the chief priest of the old religion says that he has served the gods more diligently than anybody and got less from them than others have, which is either the most cynical or the most honest remark in early English history, and then rides out and throws a spear into his own temple. The sparrow speech belongs to a different councillor.

Elio

"sun", or a Roman family name of uncertain origin

Two readings sit side by side. In Italian, Elio is the standard form of Helios, the Greek sun — that is why Italian dictionaries gloss it as "sun". Historically, though, it comes down from the Latin gens name Aelius, whose own origin was already unclear to the Romans; the link between Aelius and Greek helios is proposed but not proven. Neither reading cancels the other, and both are genuinely part of the name.

Aelius → Elio

How it traveled

The name begins in Rome as Aelius, the family name of the emperor Hadrian, born Publius Aelius Hadrianus in the first century — a name stamped on inscriptions, coins and the Aelian bridge across the Tiber. Italian and Spanish carried it forward as Elio, where it also came to serve as the vernacular form of Helios, the Greek sun.

Out loud, and in short

Edwin

ED-win

Two syllables with the stress at the front. Both syllables keep a full vowel, which is unusual for a two-syllable English name and gives it a slightly formal weight.

  • Ed — The front closed off; plain, adult and shared with several other names.
  • Eddie — The front softened; warm, unisex and used well into adult life.
  • Win — The back half; a complete word and increasingly used as a name of its own.

Elio

EH-lee-oh

That is the Italian and Spanish pronunciation, with a short first vowel. Many English speakers reach for EE-lee-oh instead, on the pattern of Eli. Both are heard in the US, so it helps to say which one you mean early and often.

  • Eli — The most natural English short form, and a long-established given name in its own right — expect some people to assume it is the full name.
  • Lio — Informal, used within families; also spelled Leo by people who mishear it.
  • Elito — Spanish-style affectionate diminutive, used by relatives rather than at school.

The trade-offs, name by name

Edwin

Strengths

  • It has been in use for fourteen hundred years and is spelled the same way in three other languages.
  • Ed, Eddie and Win are three short forms in three quite different registers.
  • Both halves have transparent meanings that can be given to a child at once.

To consider

  • The record carries it for girls in small numbers, so it is not quite an absolute signal.
  • It reads as an older man's name to many Americans, though that has begun to shift.
  • Edwin is also very common in Spanish-speaking countries, which surprises English speakers.

Elio

Strengths

  • Spelled exactly as it sounds once the first vowel is settled — four letters, no silent parts, nothing to dictate twice.
  • Works unchanged in Italian and Spanish, and needs only an accent in Portuguese, so it travels without being translated.
  • Comes with Eli already waiting as a short form, a name Americans know well and spell correctly.

To consider

  • The EH-/EE- split is real and will follow him. Teachers, coaches and roll-calls will guess, and he will spend a certain amount of life correcting them — cheerfully, most likely, but doing it.
  • It sits very close to Elia, Elias, Elliot and Emilio, and gets mistaken for all four in writing and in speech.
  • For adults who read the novel or saw the film, the name is closely tied to Call Me by Your Name. That association will fade with his own generation, but it is strong right now among grown-ups.
