Iker
Masculine · “From Basque ikertu”
Iker is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 18,921 boys against 7 girls since 1880.
Iker comes out of the Basque Country, a language older than any of its neighbors, and it is built from a verb in that language rather than borrowed from Latin or Greek. Two syllables, four letters, every one of them doing work: a bright opening vowel and a clean stop at the end. It traveled from northern Spain into wider Spanish use in the twentieth century, and from there across the Atlantic.

The story of Iker
Basque is a language isolate spoken along the western Pyrenees, unrelated to Spanish, French or anything else in Europe. In the early twentieth century Basque nationalists compiled registers of given names drawn from their own language, partly to replace Spanish saints' names with native equivalents, and Iker belongs to that effort — formed from ikertu and matched to Visitación. It spread through Spain over the following decades and became widely known abroad through Iker Casillas, the goalkeeper who captained Spain to the 2010 World Cup. Its arrival in the United States is recent, and its strongest footing is in states with deep Mexican and Spanish-speaking communities.
Meaning
From Basque ikertu, 'to visit' — also read as 'to investigate, to search'
The name was coined in the modern Basque naming movement as a masculine counterpart to the devotional Spanish name Visitación, 'visitation'. The same Basque verb carries both senses, visiting and inquiring, so both glosses point at one root.

The Toby test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Iker's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Toby climbed just as high around 1975, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Toby's path sketches the road Iker is walking now.
Iker sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Iker is headed
Iker should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Four letters, spelled the way it sounds in both English and Spanish — little risk of a lifelong spelling correction.
- Already short, so it needs no nickname to work day to day, though Ike is there if wanted.
- Functions in Basque, Spanish and English without changing shape.
- Distinctive in American classrooms while being an ordinary, established name across Spain and much of Latin America.
- The stress moves between languages: EE-ker in English, ee-KEHR from many Spanish speakers. A child may hear both versions of his own name and will likely answer to either.
- It is a modern coinage, roughly a century old, rather than an ancient name. If a long documented lineage matters to you, this one's depth is in the Basque language it was built from, not in the name itself.
- Outside Spanish-speaking communities many Americans will meet it for the first time, and some will hear it as Ryker or Icker before they see it written.
- Its recent surge means most people carrying it are children, so the name reads young for now — that shifts on its own as they grow.
