The English name begins as a surname drawn from the bird, jai in Old French, and moves the way surnames did in the nineteenth century — from family name to first name, helped along by the fact that Jay was already how people said any long J-name out loud. That habit is old and still working: a Jason or a Jeremy answers to Jay without anyone deciding it.
