Where it comes from

The story of Fayth

When French vocabulary poured into English after 1066 it rarely replaced native words outright; usually the two survived side by side with the French one carrying the formal sense, which is why English has ask and enquire, kingly and royal, cow and beef. Faith is one of the cases where the replacement was almost total. Old English had treowth, the ancestor of both truth and troth, covering fidelity, a pledge and belief at once. The French feid took the belief sense, truth took the factual one, and troth was left with the marriage pledge and then with almost nothing: betrothed, and the archaic promise to plight one's troth. The name Faith belongs to the winner of that competition, adopted by Puritans as one of their virtue names and in continuous English use since.

Meaning

Latin fides, trust

Faith comes through Old French feid from Latin fides, trust or good faith. It was adopted as a personal name by English Puritans in the seventeenth century, alongside Hope and Charity. Fayth is a modern American respelling; its peak is 2004.

About 1 girl in 1,316 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Fayth itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
