Faustino is built on the Latin word for lucky, and the Romans meant it seriously: faustus described something favored by the gods, blessed by good omen. It gave a Roman family name, then a run of early Christian saints, then the ordinary Spanish and Italian given name that reached American records with migration and peaked in 1933.

Where it comes from

The story of Faustino

Several early martyrs carried the name, and Saint Faustinus of Brescia gave it a firm place in northern Italy. Spanish and Italian naming kept it in ordinary use through the medieval and modern periods, and it is common in Mexico, the Philippines and southern Italy. American records show it rising with Italian and Mexican migration in the first third of the twentieth century and peaking in 1933. The German Faust legend, dramatized by Marlowe and then by Goethe, gave the root a second and much darker association in the English-speaking imagination, which has never attached to the Spanish and Italian name in its own countries.

Meaning

fortunate, favored, auspicious

Latin faustus means fortunate or auspicious, and it belongs to the vocabulary of Roman augury — a faustum omen was a favorable sign. Faustus and Faustinus were both used as Roman names, and the feminine Faustina was borne by two empresses. Faustino is the Italian and Spanish descendant. The legendary Doctor Faustus of the German story is unrelated in origin, though the coincidence of the name has colored how it sounds to English readers.

Faustino sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1992, with 59 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is a single positive word with a clean classical derivation.
  • Tino is a warm, established short form in two large languages.
  • The spelling is fully phonetic in Spanish and Italian alike.
What to consider
  • English readers may connect it to the Faust legend, which has nothing to do with it.
  • Its American curve is early-twentieth-century, which places a bearer's generation.
  • It is rare enough in the United States to need spelling out.
