Where it comes from

The story of Orvin

The ending is worth knowing about because it is invisible. Old English wine meant a friend, and it stands at the end of a whole set of names: Edwin is a rich friend, Alvin an elf friend, Baldwin a bold one, Godwin a friend of God, Corwin and Erwin and Selwyn all carry it. Modern English lost the word entirely and kept the element in a dozen names, so that speakers use it constantly without ever having met it as a word. The same thing happened to the elements meaning battle, wealth and protection; a great deal of Old English vocabulary survives only inside names, preserved by the accident that names are copied rather than translated.

Friend, in the second half

If the ending is the Germanic one, it is the word for a friend and is secure; the front cannot be assigned. If the whole is a respelling of Orville, the trail runs to a possible French place name or to an eighteenth-century novel. Neither account is documented for this spelling.

OR-vin

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The second keeps a full vowel rather than reducing, which is unusual and gives the name a slightly firmer finish than most names of this shape.

Fashion outlook

Orvin sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, firm and easy to spell once heard, with no silent letters.
  • Vin is a current, established short form sitting in the back half.
  • It is genuinely uncommon while containing nothing unfamiliar.
What to consider
  • Orville, Ervin and Irvin are all commoner and all will be substituted.
  • It is strongly dated to the turn of the last century in American records.
  • The front half cannot be explained, so half the name has no meaning to give.
