The story of Fariha
Arabic morphology works by fitting a three-consonant root into a fixed vowel template, and the templates carry grammatical meaning of their own, so any speaker can build farah, farih, fariha, farhan and afrah from one root and know what each one means without ever having heard it. This is why Arabic personal names are transparent in a way that English ones are not: Fariha is an adjective in everyday use, not a fossil. The name is common across the Arabic-speaking world and much more common still in Pakistan, Bangladesh and northern India, where Muslim families draw heavily on Arabic vocabulary. It entered United States records with South Asian migration and reached its best year on file in 1998.
Meaning
joyful, glad, happy
Arabic fariha, the feminine adjective from the root f-r-h, which covers joy, gladness and rejoicing. The same root gives farah, joy, and farhan, the masculine adjective. The meaning is not in dispute in any source.

The Tannia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Fariha's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tannia climbed just as high around 1976, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tannia's path sketches the road Fariha is walking now.
Fariha sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning that any Arabic speaker can confirm without a reference book.
- Used across the Arab world, Turkey, Pakistan and Bangladesh, so it travels widely.
- Simple vowels and no consonant clusters, which makes it easy for English speakers.
- Fareeha, Fariha and Feriha are all standard in different countries.
- The medial h tends to disappear in English mouths.
- It is close to Farah and Fatiha and will be confused with both.
