Where it comes from

The story of Fancy

Bobbie Gentry wrote and recorded Fancy in 1969 and it was a modest hit. Reba McEntire covered it in 1990 and it became one of the defining songs of her career, a narrative country single with a named protagonist. The name's American peak follows in 1991, a one-year lag, which is the fastest a song can move a name: the record has to be released, spend a season on the radio, and reach parents who are already expecting. Names with named protagonists in country music behave this way consistently, and Jolene, released in October 1973 and peaking in 1974, is the other clean example. The lag is the tightest measurement in name data, because everything else in naming moves over decades and this moves in months.

Meaning

English fancy, a contraction of fantasy

Fancy is a fifteenth-century shortening of fantasy, from Greek phantasia, appearance or imagination. The short form kept the sense of imagination and liking, while the long form kept the sense of the fantastic, so the two now mean different things and few speakers connect them. The adjective sense, meaning ornamental, is later and comes from fancy goods, goods made to a fancy. The name's American peak is 1991.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Everyone can spell it and say it on first sight.
  • The word has an unusually interesting history behind it.
  • Two syllables with the standard modern -y ending.
What to consider
  • It is an everyday English adjective and will be read as one.
  • The 1991 peak ties it closely to one song.
  • The short form Fanny carries a vulgar sense in British English.
