Evah
Feminine · “Hebrew "living”

The story of Evah
The sequence matters to readers of the Hebrew. The woman is created and called ishah, taken from ish; she is not given a personal name during the events in the garden. After the judgments are pronounced and before the expulsion, Adam names her Chavah, and the text immediately explains why. Commentators have read the timing in opposite directions — as an act of dominion, as an act of hope, as a statement that life continues after the sentence of death. What is not disputed is that it comes last. The name entered European use through Christianity and became one of the most widespread women's names. Evah peaks in America in 1887.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
