The story of Eula
Eulalia was a young Spanish martyr of the Roman persecutions and one of the patron saints of Barcelona, which kept the name alive in Spain and southern France. English-speaking America borrowed it lightly and shortened it heavily. Eula appears in nineteenth-century American records, particularly in the South, and peaked around 1908 — a period when several short vowel-heavy names, Ola and Ora and Ula among them, were in simultaneous use.
Meaningscholars disagree
well-spoken, sweetly speaking
Read as a shortening of Eulalia, the meaning is the Greek eu, 'well', and lalein, 'to speak'. That is the usual account. It may instead be a shortening of Eulalie or Beulah, or an independent American coinage on the pattern of Ula and Lula, in which case it has no meaning of its own.
