Etna is the mountain. Sicily's volcano was Aitna to the Greeks who settled beneath it, and those Greeks read the name against their own verb for burning — a plain description of what the mountain does. Nineteenth-century America put a great many map words on birth certificates, and this is one of the earliest of them and one of the fewest.

When was the name Etna most popular?

Etna peaked in 1882, reaching #530 nationally. Today it ranks #14942, 14,412 places below that high. See the whole 1882 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Etna

The volcano was a landmark of the ancient Mediterranean and got the mythology such a thing attracts: Greek writers put the monster Typhon under it and Hephaestus's forge inside it, both of them attempts to explain the same smoke. The Greek colonies below it — Katane, which is Catania now, and Naxos — kept the name in continuous use, and Latin took it as Aetna. It reached American given names by a different route entirely. Through the eighteen-hundreds American families drew freely on the map for daughters' names, taking rivers, states, towns and mountains, and Etna arrived among them, helped along by the towns named Etna in Pennsylvania, Maine and California. It never spread, and it never quite disappeared either.

I burn

The Greek settlers of Sicily read Aitna against aitho, to burn or blaze, and that reading has stood for two and a half thousand years. It may still be folk etymology. The Sicels lived under the mountain before the Greeks arrived and almost certainly named it first, and their language is barely recorded, so an older non-Greek name may sit underneath. Separately, some American Etnas are Edna respelled, which is an entirely different name — Hebrew, and usually read as delight. The spelling cannot tell you which.

Etna sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1923, with 26 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters, one sound, no ambiguity — spelled from hearing and said from reading, with no step in between.
  • It names something real and permanent, which very few short names manage.
  • It sits in the same shape as Edna, Etta and Enid without being a variant of any of them.
What to consider
  • In the United States the word is also a very well-known insurance company, spelled Aetna and said identically; for most Americans that association arrives before the mountain does.
  • It is a volcano, and an active one. The association is dramatic in a way that cannot be softened or explained away.
  • Edna and Etta are close enough in sound that both will be offered back, and neither of them is this name.
