Where it comes from
From Ezra to Esdras
The story of Esdras
Ezra led a return from Babylon and read the law aloud to the assembled people, an event the book describes at length and which shaped what Judaism became. Greek and Latin bibles call him Esdras, and the apocryphal books of Esdras carry the name. Spanish and Portuguese use it, and it appears in American records in current use.
Meaning
help
Through Ezra, from the Hebrew Ezra, a shortening of Azaryahu, 'the Lord has helped'. The Septuagint rendered it Esdras, and Latin and the Romance languages kept that form. The Hebrew root '-z-r is ordinary and the meaning undisputed.

The Terral test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Esdras's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Terral climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Terral's path sketches the road Esdras is walking now.
Esdras sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
