Enza
Feminine · “Latin vincere”
Influenza is an astrological term. Italian doctors of the fifteenth century blamed epidemics on the influence of the stars, and the word for that influence became the word for the disease. English took it in 1743 during an Italian outbreak, and the short form flu is a piece of medieval astrology twice shortened.

The story of Enza
The astrological sense is the older one and it is preserved in the word's structure: an influence is something that flows in, and the flowing was understood to come from the heavens. Italian physicians used influenza for an epidemic on the reasoning that a disease striking a whole population at once must have a cause acting on everyone at once, and the stars were the obvious candidate. Influenza di freddo, the influence of the cold, was one such phrase. An outbreak spread from Italy across Europe in 1743 and English adopted the word during it. The clipping to flu came in the nineteenth century. So a word that now names a virus was coined by people who thought epidemics came from planetary alignment, and the astrology is still audible in influence, which English borrowed separately and kept in its original sense.

Latin vincere, to conquer
Enza is an Italian short form of Vincenza, the feminine of Vincenzo, from Latin vincens, conquering, or of Lorenza. Italian clips names from the back, so the front of the full name is discarded. The word influenza is unrelated and shares only the final syllables; it comes from Latin influentia, an inflowing, used of astral influence. It peaks in the American data in 1970.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Enza's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marlette climbed just as high around 1951, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marlette's path sketches the road Enza is walking now.
