Enna
Feminine
The nineteenth century had coinages too, and we have simply forgotten what they sounded like. Enna, Etta, Ona, Ola, Ida and Iva were built the way modern American names are built, from a pleasing shape rather than from an inheritance, and Enna's best year on record is 1894.

Our story of Enna
It is easy to believe that inventing names is a modern habit, and the records say otherwise. Between about 1880 and 1910 American registers fill with short, open, vowel-framed women's names that no European tradition supplies and no reference book explains: Enna, Ena, Ona, Ola, Etta, Ida, Iva, Alta, Ova. They follow a template as strict as any modern one, two syllables, a single medial consonant, a final a, and they were made rather than handed down. Enna sits in the middle of that group, peaking in 1894 and effectively gone by the 1920s, and the reason it now sounds antique rather than invented is only that its generation has passed. The modern coinages will sound the same way in a hundred years.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No settled source. The American Enna is most likely a short form cut from a longer name, Henrietta and Johanna among the candidates, or a name built directly from a sound with nothing behind it. Separately, Enna is a real city in central Sicily, the site of the myth of Persephone's abduction, and Sicilian-American families may have used it for that reason; the two routes are unrelated.
Pronouncing Enna
EN-uh
Two syllables, stress on the first, with a short e. The Sicilian city is said the same way, which is a coincidence rather than a link.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- Four letters, two syllables, and no spelling difficulty at all.
- Genuinely antique rather than a modern name made to look old.
- Sits close to Emma and Enid without being either.
- Emma, Ena and Anna are all near neighbors and will be substituted constantly.
- It has no meaning to pass on, which is unusual for a name of its age.
- Very few people will have met it, so it will always need repeating.
