Where it comes from

The story of Emili

The Aemilii were an old patrician family and the Via Aemilia, the road they built across northern Italy, still runs from Rimini to Piacenza and gives Emilia-Romagna its name. English took Emily from the Latin; Catalan gives Emili and Emília, and Scandinavian records use Emili too. It appears in American records with both Spanish-speaking and Nordic families.

Not established

From the Roman gens name Aemilius, generally read from aemulus, a rival or one who strives — the source of English emulate. The derivation is standard and not certain; Roman family names are often opaque. It is unrelated to Amelia, which is Germanic.

Emili sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2006, with 112 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Emili went to 34 girls in 2025, but Emily and Emilly are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 5,556, which makes it the 37th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,135 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 289 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 47,273 for Emili itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented Roman family with a road still bearing its name.
  • Em and Emmy are both warm short forms in very current use.
  • Five letters and three syllables, quick to write.
What to consider
  • Emily is the standard English spelling and will be written for her.
  • It is constantly confused with Amelia, which is a separate Germanic name.
  • The Catalan pronunciation stresses the last syllable, which English does not.
