Emiley
Feminine · “from the Roman name Aemilia”
Emiley changes one letter of Emily and changes nothing you can hear. The -ey ending is the oldest of the three ways English writes this sound; it closes Whitney, Audrey, Sidney and Bailey, all of them place names and surnames before they were anyone's given name. It has been attached to Emily for far longer than the newer -leigh spellings have existed.

The story of Emiley
Before English spelling was standardized, the final -y, -ie and -ey were interchangeable and nobody thought twice about it; parish registers show the same person's name written all three ways within a single lifetime. What changed is not the endings but the expectation, because print and then bureaucracy fixed one spelling per name and turned the others into variants. Emiley is one of those stranded alternatives rather than a modern invention. The name itself came into ordinary English use in the eighteenth century, alongside Amelia, which the Hanoverian court had brought over from Germany, and the two were used almost interchangeably for a generation before settling into separate names. The -ey spelling is a survival from the period when that was still being worked out.

from the Roman name Aemilia
Emily descends from Aemilia, and the meaning of the Roman name itself is argued rather than known — usually connected to a Latin word for striving, never demonstrated. Worth separating from Amelia, which sounds close and is not related: Amelia comes from a Germanic element, amal, meaning work or effort. Two names, two languages, one very similar sound, and a great deal of confusion between them in English records.

The Charlynn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Emiley's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Charlynn climbed just as high around 1952, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Charlynn's path sketches the road Emiley is walking now.
Emiley sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The ending has centuries of English precedent behind it rather than a recent fashion.
- It contains Miley, a working short form that no other spelling of this name offers.
- Familiar sound, unfamiliar page, and the whole difference is a single letter.
- Emily is the spelling the world defaults to, and this one gets corrected toward it on nearly every document.
- It inherits a very familiar sound without inheriting the familiar spelling, so the recognition arrives and the correctness does not.
- Written by hand, the -ey looks like a slip of the pen about as often as it looks like a decision.
