Immanuel is a sign, not a description. Isaiah gives it to a king as a piece of political theater: a child will be born, he will be called God-with-us, and before he can tell right from wrong the two kingdoms you are afraid of will be gone. The name is the message, and the prophet used his own children the same way.

Where it comes from

The story of Emanuela

Isaiah names children as messages, and he does it more than once. His first son is Shear-Jashub, a remnant shall return, and the boy is brought along to a confrontation with the king so that the name is present in the room. His second is Maher-shalal-hash-baz, swift is the spoil, quick is the plunder, which the prophet is told to write on a large tablet before the child is conceived. Immanuel belongs to the same sequence, given in the same chapter to the same king in the same crisis. What all three have in common is that the name does the arguing: the prophet says something by naming, and the child carries the statement around. That is a use of naming English has no equivalent for. The Christian reading of the Isaiah passage as a prophecy of a distant birth is a later interpretation of a text with an immediate political context.

Meaning

Hebrew immanu el, God with us

From Hebrew immanu, with us, and el, God. The name appears in Isaiah 7:14 as a sign given to King Ahaz of Judah, and is quoted in Matthew 1:23. Emanuela is the Italian and Portuguese feminine, formed from Emanuele with a Latin -a. The single m of the Italian spelling is standard there and differs from the Hebrew doubling. It peaks in the American data in 1918.

Emanuela sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2015, with 22 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Emanuela went to 12 girls in 2025, but Emmanuella, Emmanuela and Emanuella are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 92, which makes it the 868th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,494 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 17,470 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Emanuela itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Hebrew meaning is settled and central to two traditions.
  • Manu and Ela give short forms in different registers.
  • It is current across Italian, Portuguese and Romanian.
What to consider
  • Five syllables is long for American use.
  • Manuela is far more common in Spanish-speaking families.
  • The single m is Italian and looks like an error to English readers.
