Where it comes from
From Adalheidis to Elke
The story of Elke
Adalheidis was a tenth-century empress and saint, and her name spread across Europe in forms that no longer look related. French shortened and reshaped it into Adelais and then Aalis, which English took as Alice. German kept Adelheid and clipped it to Heidi in the south and to Elke and Alke in the Frisian north. English also borrowed the full form as Adelaide, so the language ended up holding two versions of the same name and treating them as unrelated. Elke's American visibility is narrower and datable: Elke Sommer, born in Berlin in 1940, was one of the most photographed actresses of the mid-1960s, appearing in a run of American and international films, and the name's small United States peak sits squarely in that decade. Outside it the name has never been American at all.
Meaning
Germanic adal and heid, noble kind
Elke is a Frisian and Low German short form of Adelheid, from Old High German adal, noble, and heit, kind or sort, the same elements behind Adelaide, Alice, Heidi and Ada. The -ke ending is a northern German and Dutch diminutive suffix. The American peak is 1968.

The Neomia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Elke's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Neomia climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Neomia's path sketches the road Elke is walking now.
Elke sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
