Where it comes from

The story of Neomia

The Book of Ruth is four chapters long and structurally strange. It is named after a Moabite woman — a foreigner from a people the rest of the text is hostile to — and the relationship it turns on is between her and her mother-in-law, who has lost her husband and both sons and tells the younger women to go home. Ruth refuses, in the lines everybody knows about where you go I will go. Two widows with no standing arrange their own survival across the rest of the book, and the genealogy at the end makes the foreign woman the great-grandmother of David. Nothing else in the collection is shaped like it.

Meaning

Pleasantness

The Hebrew name means pleasant or agreeable. The added ending here is an American lengthening and carries nothing of its own; in particular the neo at the front is not the Greek word for new, which the spelling suggests and the history does not support.

Neomia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1933, with 33 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Neomia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, warm and easy to explain.
  • It is long enough to carry several very different short forms.
  • The name behind it is recognized across three religious traditions.
What to consider
  • Naomi is the familiar name and hers will be shortened to it by people who assume the ending is an error.
  • Four syllables will be cut to two by any classroom.
  • The neo at the front invites a Greek reading that the name does not have.
