Elizbeth
Feminine · “my God is an oath”
Elizbeth is Elizabeth with one letter gone — and, if the spelling is followed, one syllable with it: ih-LIZ-beth rather than ih-LIZ-uh-beth. The name underneath is unchanged, and it is among the most widely carried in the world: a Hebrew name that reached English through Greek and Latin and has not left since.

From Elisheva to Elizbeth
The story of Elizbeth
Elisheba, the wife of Aaron, carries the name in Exodus; Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, carries it in Luke, and it is the second of those two that put the name into every Christian language. Greek made it Elisabet, Latin Elisabeth, and medieval Europe multiplied it: Isabel in Spain, Erzsebet in Hungary, Elsbeth in the German-speaking lands. English took it up in earnest under the Tudors and has never set it down. The contracted spellings belong to that same long history rather than to modern invention — Lisbeth and Elsbeth drop exactly the vowel that Elizbeth drops, and they have done so for centuries in Scandinavia and Germany. What is new here is only that the contraction happens inside the full English spelling instead of replacing it.

my God is an oath
Hebrew Elisheva joins El, God, with sheva, and sheva is where the argument sits. Read as the word for an oath it gives my God is an oath, or God is my promise. Read against the word for seven — a number bound up with oath-taking in Hebrew, since to swear was to seven oneself — it gives God is abundance, or God is satisfaction. Both readings are ancient and both are seriously held. The missing letter changes none of it.

Three syllables if the spelling is obeyed, four if the name is treated as Elizabeth — which is what most readers will do without noticing they have done it. Both are heard, and the difference is small enough that many carriers stop correcting it.

The trade-off
- Every short form belonging to Elizabeth belongs here too: Liz, Beth, Eliza, Libby, Elsie.
- The name behind it is understood in every European language and most others, and needs no translation anywhere on earth.
- The dropped vowel has real precedent — Lisbeth and Elsbeth do exactly the same thing, and have for centuries.
- This will be read as a typo. Not occasionally — as a rule, by teachers, clerks and software, and it will be silently corrected inside databases.
- Because the standard spelling is one of the most familiar words in English, the eye supplies the missing letter without noticing, so the correction has to be made out loud every time.
- There is no settled saying for this exact spelling, so the number of syllables gets decided at home and contested everywhere else.
