The story of Eesa
Isa ibn Maryam is named twenty-five times in the Quran as a prophet born of a virgin. Arabic-speaking Christians use Yasu; Muslims use Isa, and the difference is itself of interest to scholars. Eesa is a South Asian transliteration, and South Asian emigration brought it to America, where it is in current use.

the Lord is salvation
Through the Arabic Isa, from the Hebrew Yeshua — yasha, 'to save', and a form of the divine name. Why Arabic has Isa rather than Yasu is genuinely debated; a route through Syriac is the commonest explanation. The Hebrew meaning is settled; the transmission is not.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Sanchez test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Eesa's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sanchez climbed just as high around 1980, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sanchez's path sketches the road Eesa is walking now.
