Edyth
Feminine · “fortune and battle”
Edyth is Edith with the y put back. The Old English name underneath was Eadgyth, and the y in the second half is not an ornament but the original letter — the same one standing in the Old English word for battle. The name belonged to English royalty before the Norman conquest, went quiet for centuries, and returned with the Victorian appetite for Anglo-Saxon names.

The story of Edyth
Edith of Wilton, a daughter of King Edgar who died young in the tenth century and was venerated as a saint, is the reason the name stayed in use through the Middle Ages. It had royal weight before that and kept it after: an Edith was queen to Edward the Confessor, and Norman families continued to give the name when they abandoned almost every other English one, which is why it is among the tiny handful of Anglo-Saxon women's names that survived the conquest intact. It went dormant for several centuries and returned during the nineteenth-century revival of medieval England, when Anglo-Saxon names came back as a matter of taste. The -yth and -ythe spellings belong to that revival, and they restore a letter the intervening centuries had smoothed away.
Meaning
fortune and battle
Eadgyth joins two Old English words. Ead means wealth, prosperity or good fortune, and it is the same element standing at the front of Edward, Edmund and Edgar. Gyth means battle or strife. Compound names of this kind were assembled from prestigious elements rather than for their combined sense, so the literal sum — fortunate battle — is an accident of construction rather than a wish anyone made. The ead- half is the one that meant most to the people using it, and it is the half that founded the largest family of English names.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- The y is a restoration rather than a modern respelling — the Old English name really did carry it, in that exact position.
- Edie is an established short form with a long independent life of its own.
- Two syllables stressed on the first, which is the easiest shape an English name can have.
- It will be corrected to Edith constantly, and the correction sounds like pedantry because the two are said identically.
- The name is still strongly represented among the oldest living generations, which for some families is exactly the appeal and for others is the whole objection.
- Edyth, Edythe and Edith all exist and none of them owns the sound, so the spelling has to be given every single time.
