Where it comes from

The story of Eamon

Edmund the Martyr was a ninth-century king of East Anglia killed by Danes, and his name reached Ireland through English settlement, becoming Éamonn. Éamon de Valera fought in 1916, escaped execution, and led Ireland as taoiseach and president across five decades. Irish emigration brought the name to America, where it is in current use.

Meaning

protector of wealth

Through Edmund, from the Old English ead, 'wealth' or 'fortune', and mund, 'protection' or 'hand'. Irish took it as Éamonn. Both elements are ordinary Old English and the compound is transparent and undisputed.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Eamon went to 102 boys in 2025, but Eamonn is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 138, which makes it the 790th most-given boys’ name of the year — 854 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 12,377 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 16,746 for Eamon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The wealth-protector meaning is transparent and undisputed.
  • A martyred king and a founding Irish statesman both stand behind it.
  • Two clean syllables with no real pronunciation risk.
What to consider
  • The fada is dropped in American records, which loses the Irish spelling.
  • Éamonn with two n's is the standard Irish form.
  • English speakers may read the ea as EE rather than AY.
