Where it comes from

The story of Reynaldo

Rinaldo is one of Charlemagne's paladins in the Italian romances, and Ariosto and Tasso both give him major roles; Handel's first London opera is named for him. Spanish and Portuguese made Reynaldo and Reinaldo. Spanish-speaking families brought it to the United States, where it appears steadily and is in current use.

Meaning

ruler's counsel

From the Germanic regin, 'counsel' or 'the gods who give it', and wald, 'rule' or 'power'. The same compound gives Reginald, Ronald, Rinaldo and Reynolds. Both elements are ordinary and the meaning is transparent and undisputed.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Reynaldo went to 102 boys in 2025, but Reinaldo is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 116, which makes it the 812th most-given boys’ name of the year — 832 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 14,725 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 16,746 for Reynaldo itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The counsel-and-rule meaning is transparent and undisputed.
  • One of Charlemagne's paladins carries the Italian form.
  • Rey and Naldo are two short forms, both in real use.
What to consider
  • Reinaldo is the Portuguese spelling and both are in use.
  • Three syllables make it longer than the English Reginald in speech.
  • Ronaldo is close enough to cause confusion.
