The story of Reinaldo
Raginald was a common Frankish and Norman name and came to England in 1066. Its Italian form Rinaldo belongs to one of the great figures of the Charlemagne romances, a paladin who appears in Ariosto's Orlando Furioso and in a long tradition of Italian puppet theater where he is still a hero. Spanish and Portuguese kept Reinaldo. The name came to the Americas with Spanish and Portuguese colonization, and American records show it with Caribbean and Latin American communities, peaking in the early 1960s with Cuban arrival.
Meaning
counsel-power; ruler by counsel
Germanic ragin means counsel, advice or the decision of the gods, and wald means rule or power — the same second element as in Harald, Oswald and Ronald. The compound Raginald gives Latin Reginaldus, French Renaud, English Reginald and Reynold, Italian Rinaldo and Spanish Reinaldo. The first element is not related to Latin rex despite the resemblance. The derivation is settled.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Deane test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Reinaldo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Deane climbed just as high around 1934, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Deane's path sketches the road Reinaldo is walking now.
Reinaldo sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
